Project Overview
Forty4 Design partnered with 1 Hotel to bring a sustainability-driven activation to life during SXSW in Austin, Texas.
Installed at Fareground Austin, the experience centered around conscious consumption, inviting attendees to engage with the brand’s philosophy of traveling lighter and giving back.
At the heart of the activation was a physical interpretation of 1 Hotels’ “1 Less Thing” initiative, transforming a brand message into an interactive, real-world experience beyond the hotel.
Challenge
The Challenge
This project came with an aggressive timeline — 1 week for concept development and just two weeks for fabrication and installation. Beyond speed, the activation needed to:
- Reflect 1 Hotels’ sustainability standards (no plastics, natural materials)
- Function as both an art piece and a usable structure
- Communicate a clear brand message in a crowded SXSW environment
- Be durable, safe, and efficient to install and dismantle
The biggest challenge wasn’t just building fast – it was ensuring the experience felt intentional, not rushed.
Approach
Our Approach
We focused on translating message into experience. Rather than creating a generic activation, we centered the design around “1 Less Thing” – a concept rooted in traveling lighter and giving back. Every design decision was made to reinforce that idea:
- A structured donation system that felt integrated, not added on
- Messaging physically embedded into the build
- Natural materials that aligned with the brand’s environmental values
- A layout that encouraged interaction without overcomplication
By narrowing the concept early, we were able to move quickly while maintaining clarity and purpose.
The execution
Our Process
Rapid Concept Devleopment
We moved immediately into concepting and 3D visualization to define structure, messaging integration, and user interaction.
Message Integration into the Build
We took 1 Hotels’ “1 Less Thing” initiative and embedded it directly into the structure, both visually and functionally. Attendees weren’t just reading the message, they were participating in it by contributing items, reinforcing the idea of traveling lighter and giving back.
This transformed the installation from a static build into an interactive brand moment.
Technical Translation
We developed fabrication-ready schematics to ensure accuracy and efficiency during production, minimizing delays under a compressed timeline.
Accelerated Fabrication
With just two weeks to build, we coordinated closely with our fabrication team to source materials, construct efficiently, and stay on schedule.
Onsite Execution
Installation was executed with precision to ensure structural integrity, clean presentation, and readiness for public engagement during SXSW.

Summary
What started as a tight turnaround became one of our fastest and most intentional activations to date.
In just three weeks, we transformed a brand message into a physical experience — proving that speed and clarity can coexist when strategy leads execution.

Testimonial
Cannot recommend Forty4 Design enough! They were incredibly professional, supportive, and put together a stunning display on a VERY tight timeline that managed to incorporate every one of our initial requests and edits. Felix, the owner, kept me updated throughout the entire build, install, and breakdown and I was so grateful to have him and his team as part of the event. Wish I could give them more than 5 stars!
